What are Dermal Fillers and how do they work?
As we age the natural proteins in the skin, collagen and elastin, reduce as cells lose their ability to produce more of these components. The skin also becomes dryer, thinner, and we start to see the effects of gravity change and movement of fat under the skin.
When we are born, we also have plentiful amounts of a natural sugar molecule – Hyaluronic Acid (HA) in our body (connective tissue and skin), but as we get older this store of HA diminishes, leaving the skin less supported, and so lines and wrinkles can develop.
Hyaluronic acid is a major component of skin. When skin is also exposed to excessive sun UV rays, it becomes inflamed (sunburn) and the cells in the skin also stop producing as much HA and increase the rate of its breakdown.
By lifting and smoothing targeted folds and wrinkles by adding subtle volume, HA dermal fillers can make a difference to a person’s appearance, giving you a fresher look.
What does the treatment involve at London City Skin Clinic?
The treatment of wrinkles with dermal filler will usually involve injecting the natural sugar molecule HA filler through a tiny needle. The discomfort is minimal as the treatment does not take long to perform. The result of treatment with dermal filler is seen immediately after the treatment, and settles within the skin over the next 1-2 weeks.
The procedure can last around 30 minutes and patients can expect to notice the effects for as long as 6-18 months after treatment. Treatment with fillers can be reversible, as there is an enzyme that can dissolve the filler.
With any injectable treatment, there can be some slight bruising or swelling that accompanies it. This should not persist much longer than a day or so, and is easily coverable with makeup.
Who should have dermal fillers?
Facial fillers can be used on a wide range of patients, and are primarily used for skin rejuvenation and the reduction of lines and wrinkles. In particular, they are useful for patients where the mid and lower face is showing signs of volume loss and gravitational change. HA fillers are also used for lip enhancement or definition.
At London City Skin Clinic, we look at both the cause and effect of Ageing, so this gives a better understanding of how to rejuvenate the face, not necessarily just treating the lines itself.
Fillers help to restore the volume loss that naturally begins to occur when we reach our thirties, and in turn gives a fresher, brighter appearance.
Who should avoid this treatment?
There is no known risk to those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, but we would advise against having treatment under these circumstances.
Which dermal fillers should I have?
There are numerous dermal fillers available, and you should only consider those that have been approved by stringent testing, such as US FDA approved fillers e.g Belotero, Radiesse, Juv©derm.
Each brand of dermal fillers has a range, which vary in their particle size and hydration or volumising capacity for the indication you are trying to treat.
At London City Skin Clinic, you will only be treated by fully trained and experienced medical Dr’s, who understand the indications for the different fillers, and can tailor your treatment accordingly.
The results should be subtle, leaving people to believe you are looking good for your age. This is where the skill and experience of the practitioner is important.
Also we offer a bespoke treatment plan with follow up, to ensure you are happy with the results.
What questions should you ask your medical practitioner before considering a treatment?
– What qualifications do you have?
– Which brands of products do you use and why?
– What are the potential side effects?
– What after-care will I be given?
