Excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) can affect both men and women and can be an embarrassing, and overwhelming problem for those who are suffering.

Treatment Overview

This condition can be generalised, or localised to certain parts of the body. Increased sweating is a normal response to a rise in body temperature, and to emotions such as anxiety.  Sweating is one of the most important ways in which the body loses heat, however, people with hyperhidrosis produce more sweat than needed to control their body temperature.  If you have ever suffered with anxiety and then had sweaty armpits at an occasion you will know how upsetting this can be.

People who suffer with excessive sweating can be affected in winter as well as the summer.  Often there is no body odour, just a damp patch that shows up and gets worse the more you think about it.  People who suffer with hyperhidrosis can produce a large volume of sweat. This means that the hands, feet, chest or armpits (depending on which part of the body is affected) may be constantly damp. This can affect everyday activities, and it can cause embarrassment.

Hyperhidrosis is a common problem for men and women and is estimated to affect 1-3% of the UK population.  The most visual symptoms of hyperhidrosis are usually found in the armpit, when the over-production of sweat presents itself as damp patches, although can also be troublesome in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Although systemic diseases can sometimes cause excessive sweating, most cases occur in people who are otherwise healthy with normal sweat glands. In this situation, the nervous system over stimulates and activates the sweat glands.

Other triggers include:

Exercise

Heat or cold

Alcohol, coffee or tea, smoking, hot or spicy food

Stress, anxiety or strong emotions

There are two main types of hyperhidrosis:

Focal hyperhidrosis is the more common type involving excessive sweating on the feet, hands and in about 30-40% of cases, the armpits.

Generalised hyperhidrosis affects the whole body. It is much less common and is usually necessary to exclude other systemic causes before you embark on treatment.

Botox treatment can be given by an injection into the skin to stop sweating. It is recommended for the treatment of armpit (axillary) hyperhidrosis, and has FDA approval and license for this indication.

Botox blocks the chemical messenger from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands do not receive chemical signals, the sweating stops. After several weeks, new nerve endings will grow to replace them. This means that the effects of treatment last for several months, typically 6-12months, but eventually they will wear off.

It is recommended to have the treatment every 6 months to receive the best possible results. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be tailored for you.

Using a very fine needle, your doctor will inject a small amount of a solution containing Botox into the area to be treated. For the armpit treatment, a series of small Botox injections are injected into the relevant areas in each armpit. The treatment takes about 30 minutes and you should notice significant improvement within 7-10 days of your treatment.

This will only be carried out by an experienced Doctor, and Dr Robby Bajaj has performed many of these treatments.

Post treatment: Simply avoid touching, rubbing or applying anything on the treated area for 4 hours to prevent infection and any spread of the medicine. Also, it is recommended not to exercise for 24-48hrs hours after the procedure. Specific instructions will be given to you on the day of treatment.

If you decide not to have further treatment, your sweating will gradually return to its pre-treated state. The effects of the treatment will gradually wear off, and your underarm sweating may return to its pre-treatment state.

Your sweat doesn't go anywhere or get backed up because the sweat simply is not produced in the treated areas. Remember, this is a treatment for over-sweating, and the rest of your body is free to produce moisture normally, so body temperature is maintained.

When antiperspirants cannot control symptoms of your severe sweating, Botox may be able to help. At London City Skin Clinic, we can help you to decide if this treatment is right for you. Other areas may possibly also be treated with Botox, but you can discuss this with the Doctor.

In order to make the right treatment decision, you should tell the Doctor about all of your medical conditions.
